Hello, readers! My name is Jaylon Martin, author of my first published book series the Black Star Universe. I wrote this autobiography to tell my story of the five year journey I went through writing and publishing this book series. It wasn't an easy task because there were many obstacles that I had to face in order to get to where I am today. When it came to writing all three books in the series, it was a challenge because I knew there were going to be many hardships I had to face: negativity in oneself or others praying for your downfall. Now that I am a young African American author, I am ready to use this autobiography to not only share my experiences, but to empower others not to give up on their dreams because no dream is too high to reach.

Recovery Ride

My name is Jaylon J. Martin.

May 5th, 2023 is the night I realized I had a really bad drinking problem.

After that party and a chain of mistakes that occurred there, I knew I had to give up alcohol once and for all. If it meant gaining the trust of the people I love again, I was willing to get sober.

On May 6th, 2023, the day after the party, I placed myself in alcohol recovery. I refused to allow strong substances propel me into saying hurtful things or committing hurtful acts. This was not only the beginning of my journey to sobriety, but the beginning of proving myself to everyone, but most importantly, myself.

That entire summer, along with suffering from anxiety, I was haunted by the mistakes I made that were influenced by the taste or presence of alcohol. Every day and night was a challenge, and I was not sure how I was going to live with what I’ve done and make it up to everyone I disappointed.

Writing has always been my therapy for overcoming any situation. I normally wrote fantasy novels, but I believed it was no one but God who told me to take a break from the fantasy, so I could build myself to confront the reality.

In a collection of poems I wrote, I invite readers into my heart, my mind, my pain, my regret, my apology, and most importantly, my recovery.

I Talk To Horses

Although I began living a life that embraced sobriety, there were still a lot of past traumas I needed to unpack.

Growing up, the sight of horses always excited me—I admired them deeply. I never knew there was a kind of therapy that incorporated them. This is called equine therapy, a therapeutic process that involves the presence of horses. After a year of loss and rediscovering who I truly am, I felt this was exactly what I needed.

Almosta Ranch was where my equine therapy journey began. It was there that I met many loving horses—especially Beau, who became one of my best friends. My bond with these horses encouraged me to view my past through a new lens: one of forgiveness—for myself and others—and of self-love.

The 22 poems in this book are about more than healing—they are about experiencing transformation, showing love from a distance, and truly letting go of the things that have weighed me down.

“Many wonder about the change in me, and I never reveal what my source is. Happily, in this book, I reveal...

I Talk to Horses.”
